Places to Visit

A selection of places to visit whilst in Bulgaria:

Sofia

  • Boyana Church
    Boyana Village
    Sofia
Comments: World heritage Site on outskirts of Sofia. The small church is decorated with wall piantings dating back to 13th century.
  • Simeonovo Gondola
    Simeonova
    Sofia
Comments: Take the 6km, 25 minute gondola ride up to the top of Mount Vitosha. As you rise over 1970m the views of the Sofia plain are stunning on the way up, and if it is clear even better from the top.
  • The Sofia Mineral Baths
Comments: Currently being restored, but even now the beautifully decorated exterior walls give some indication of its potential.
  • Rakovski Street and Vitosha Boulevard
Comments: For you shopaholics these a the main commercial streets. Whilst there are a few large 'international' stores on Vistosha, most of the shops are small, local boutiques. Not your average Capital city shopping experience.

Plovdiv

  • The Old Town
Comments: You cannot take a visit to Plovdiv and avoid the old town. Its cobbled streets rise over the newer part of the city.
  • The Ancient Theatre
Comments: Originally built by the Romans in the 2nd century, the once destyoyed amphitheatre has been sympathetically restored. Take a drink at the cafe and admire the views over the city.
  • The International Plovdiv Fair
Comments: The fair takes place here twice a year.
  • The Artist Market
Comments: Every day, in the square adjacent to the Mosque, many artists gather to sell their wares. Whilst many are of low quality, showing inumerable views of the old town, there are one or two of quite stunning quality and originality.

Veliko Tarnovo

  • Tsaravets
Comments: The ancient fortress sits to one side of the current town. Its impressive fortifications are surmounted by a simple, but pretty, church.
  • Samovodska Charshia: Architectural and Ethnographical complex
Comments: This small street in the old town contains a variety of active workshops using traditonal skills and techniques.
  • Arbanassi Village Architectural Reserve
Comments: Five churches and two monasteries are preserved in the vilage, as well as many houses dating from the 16-18th century. There are also some wonderful restaurants.
