Taxis

The taxis in Bulgaria can be very good, very bad or anywhere in between!

  • All taxis are yellow in Bulgaria, and can be pre-booked by telephone (assuming you can speak Bulgarian, because the dispatcher is unlikely to speak english), or you can hail them on the street - there are lots so you will not have to wait long.

  • Taxis are supposed to be licensed and the driver's details/ID card dislayed on the dashboard. They should also display their tarif card and have a working meter. However, there are some less than scrupulous drivers so beware.
  • There are one or two good taxis companies in Sofia - OK Supertrans are probably the best to opt for.

  • When hailing a taxi be choosy - don't hail cabs that look unsafe or tatty: they probably are, and may be unlicensed.
  • At the airport be careful of the taxi touts as you come out of the arrivals lounge. They will insist the price is 10 Euro's to the city, and that they are the cheapest. They are not, and are best avoided. They almost certainly will not have a working meter!
  • At the airport you should locate the OK Supertrans desk - they have the offical franchise at the aiport. You will be given a booking number and directed to the officail rang outrside where your driver will be waiting for you - he will ask for your number. The rate on the clock is about 7 leva - give the driver 10 leva (5 Euro if that is the currency you have brought) they deserve it.
